HANDLING STORY

Improve your odds

Successfully developing a project from early concept to production financing requires writers, directors and producers answering two key questions:

  1. What is your story really about? The THEME.

  2. And how do you intend to explore it? The STORY.

Working with your story as a framework, allows you to focus on crafting the building blocks that bring its true meaning to the surface.

The story of a woman navigating her roles as head of state and as wife and mother to a dysfunctional family, against the backdrop of significant historical events, serves as the story framework to explore the theme can one retain their sense of self while being expected to devote themselves entirely to something else. The Crown.

When a surgeon must choose the unthinkable—taking a family member's life to save the rest—a story framework is created through which we explore the theme, how do we hold onto logic when faith seems to offer the certain answer. The Killing of a Sacred Deer.

I get writers, directors and producers to explore back and forth between theme and mapping out their story framework. By working within a loop, they create more compelling and coherent stories, significantly improving the chances of projects being made."

Our session with Paul Tyler, provided the most insight and clarity I’ve had about my feature since I conceived it.
— Julietta Boscolo, Writer/director, Sydney, Australia / session length 1,5 hours
The session with Daan & you is one of my favorite moments in my career
— Iris Otten, Producer at Pupkin - Quality Time / Session length 1,5 hours

This method has a proven track record across film, TV series, fiction, documentaries, entertainment formats, XR and interactive media. Its starting point can be simply your one-page synopsis or your treatment, both can be in any language. It can also be your script, ideally in English.

Paul’s technique of mapping was a turning point in the development of my project. It helped me to clearly see the unconscious hesitations I was holding towards my subject.
— MARYAM ZAREE, WRITER 'Born in Evin' 2019, Berlin, Germany / session length 1 hour
I think throughout my entire career I have never enjoyed something so amazing like this!! It was so real for me and even magical. Like my own characters came to life.
— Zain Duraie Film Director/Writer at Give up the Ghost / session length 1,5 hours
A scary and exciting process that I truly recommend to anyone who wants to know what their idea is, and more importantly why they want to give it life.
— MADS DAMSBO FILMMAKER & CO-FOUNDER & PARTNER AT MAKROPOL, Copenhagen, Denmark / session length 1 hour

Paul helped our head writers dive deep into the background story of our main character. The workshop made us grasp what makes the series work and which elements of story-telling are the most important for developing new stories and characters.
— MARIKA ROTHER, WRITER & PRODUCER SUPERRTL, Köln, Germany / session length 6 hours
Paul Tyler`s approach has amazing impact for the writer. Paul just puts the story out of the writer`s head and maps it with objects on the table.
— MICHAEL SEEBER, FILMPRODUCER, DIRECTOR, SCRIPTWRITER, SCRIPT CONSULTANT, Vienna, Austria / session length 1 hour
It was the equivalent of doing three weeks of creative work into one three hour session.

Identify the essence of your concept so that you could pitch anywhere from a large auditorium, a client’s office to a noisy pub. HANDLING STRATEGY

Start from the same place

When developing a new strategy, policy or best practice, you will struggle if your team is not on the same page regarding the challenges and opportunities that make up the systems in which you operate. If you don’t agree on such system complexity, you run the risk of failure.

I help teams clarify, coordinate and capture a shared understanding of a concept by using a fast and proven mapping technique. The value for you is getting everybody onto that same page, unbelievably fast.

Teams map-out the way their organisations create, deliver and capture value. Pressing issues are exposed so that any generated concept can be tested and validated.

Companies need tools to translate strategy into something meaningful - your tool does exactly that.
— PERNILLE ERNSTVED RYPE, SENIOR ADVISOR, ADVICE A/S, Copenhagen, Denmark
It gave us really useful tools for strategic and critical thinking, generating common understanding of the complexity of urban development work. Very useful and enjoyable. You definitely hit the right nerve.
— Åshild Andrea Brekke - Senior Executive Officer - Agency for Cultural Affairs, City of Oslo, Norway
The workshop landed up in an excellent place and sets us up nicely for next steps.

Systemic intervention, as opposed to linear intervention, helps clients to help themselves. It’s a powerful instrument and the benefits cannot be described by words. They have to be experienced. Paul is able to get everyone around the table to the same point, no one is left behind.

HANDLING AUDIENCE

Need a moderator for an event?

By seeing your event as one whole system, rather than simply a series of talks, I’ll generate more value for your audience, for your speakers and therefore you.

Twelve years in BBC television production and four years in theatre has equipped me with a sharp, highly analytical editorial and pragmatic approach to engage and hold an audience’s attention. My British sense of humor allows me dig hard whilst seeming polite.

I'll work with your team during preparations to design the journey for the audience, connect with all speakers in advance, and then on the big day I’ll seek out and illuminate the red thread; making you think and laugh at the same time across:

  • introductory talks

  • speaker intros/outros

  • interviews with live/virtual guests

  • panel and audience debates

  • sum-ups.

IN-PERSON / VIRTUAL

Thanks for one of the best moderations I have seen in an event for a long time.
— JAN MARTIN AHLERS, FOUNDER OF PROJECT 1 MILLION, Hamburg, Germany
Paul mixes the insight of a writer with the wit of a stand-up comedian.
— YOURI LOEDTS. HEAD OF GAME DEPARTMENT. VLAAMS AUDIOVISUEEL FONDS, Brussels, Belgium
He was smart, charming, funny, well-prepared and overly professional. The audience loved him and he was wonderful to work with!
— Ingrid Haug, Design Matters 2020, Copenhagen, Denmark
